A typical sand dune species

This species is largely spread from Central to eastern Europem and western Asia on sand dunes, both continental and around the coasts of Black and Caspian Seas. The most common and largely spread subspecies is this one, from central-eastern Europe (Hungary and northern Serbia up to central Ukraine). The other subpspecies are ssp. odessana (Prodan) Dostal from the coasts of north-western Black Sea, ssp. arenaria s.str., ssp. majorovii (Dumbadze) Dostal, ssp. sophiae (Klokov) Dostal which all occur in the eastern part of the north Pontic steppes.
